Yoga and similar forms of exercise offer a workout for the body and soul. Yoga Delivers Exercise for the Body and SoulThere's more to getting a good workout than simply sweating and lifting weights. When the focus is to feed and body and the spirit, yoga and other similar forms of exercise are ideal. The ancient arts that recognize the deep and undying connection between body, mind and even spirit and soul remain strong and solid ways for people to enjoy good workouts. From yoga and the martial arts to more modernized versions, such as Pilates, the link between the old and the new is undeniable. The benefits of these forms of exercise are undeniably good. In most cases, they gently work out the body while freeing the mind of its stress. Some adaptations of the ancient ways even provide for a more vigorous workout, but the basic principles remain the same: Work the body, free the mind, feed the soul. Let's take a look at all three forms of exercise. Yoga is More than Just StretchingPracticed for hundreds of years in conjunction with the Hindu religion, yoga is form of exercise that provides challenges for both the mind and body. It is designed to serve as a conduit for deep meditation, using various stretching and toning techniques as tools along the way.The art of yoga has become a popular practice in the Western world. Although not every yoga enthusiast pursues the art for its spiritual and meditative benefits, there is no denying this practice works wonders for that as well as the body. The gentle, graceful movements of arts such as yoga and tai chi exercise the body while providing for excellent flexibility and posturing. Yoga training is a fairly easy endeavor to dive into. The popularity of yoga is such that classes are held from coast to cost, both low-cost and rather expensive. The basic yoga postures are also fairly easy to attempt at home using books, articles and even training tapes. The benefits of yoga fall into its gentle nature that stretches and tones the body without undo stress being put on it before the body is ready. The more advanced postures require some build up to attain and are not recommended for everyone. The beginning postures are gentle enough they are often recommended for pregnant women to relieve stress and strain. Getting into yoga requires minimal investment. This fitness/mind activity requires really nothing more than special yoga pants to allow for more easy stretching. Some other yoga equipment might be necessary, but generally the yoga pant is the only main consideration. From Hatha yoga to Bikram yoga, this mind, body exercise retains strong popularity. It's loved for its gentleness and strong outcome, especially if the mind aspect is truly brought into play. Martial Arts Offer More than a KickAlso renowned for their ancient links, the basic martial arts have been and remain in high demand. From karate and kung fu to tai chi and tae kwon do, the forms are different buy many of the principles are the same.Using mind and body to promote health, peace and discipline, these ancient arts retain a strong and ever-growing following. The benefits of the various martial arts generally depend on the form in question, however. Tai chi, for example, is known for its fluid, graceful movements and gentle stretching. This form of exercise is considered ideal for almost anyone. This form of martial arts is enjoyed by the young and old alike. It will, however, not generally provide the kind of fast-paced workout a tae kwon do sparring match might. The more aggressive or defensive forms of martial arts, such as kung fu and tae kwon do, are known for not only their flexibility producing moves, but also their cardiovascular benefits. A full tae kwon do class can very easily provide a solid, total body workout. In general, the martial arts require a discipline of the mind over the body to perform correctly. This means time and practice will be necessary to excel. To reach a level of proficiency in these activities can take years or more. Some forms of the martial arts are not necessarily for everyone, but the fact is most provide very good fitness routines for everyone, from the very young to the very old, to enjoy. Focusing in on both the mind and body, these forms of exercise demand discipline and dedication to master, but the rewards are deemed well worth it by followers. Modern Exercise Marries Old with the NewSome of the basic principles of older forms of mind, body exercise, such as yoga and the martial arts have been modernized into completely new ways to work out. From Pilates to tae bo, the options on this front are rather impressive.Pilates itself is a fairly new creation that follows the old forms of mind-body exercise to an extent. Offering gentle exercise, body awareness, posturing and graceful movement, the Pilates craze is one that has most certainly taken hold. Pilates fitness classes are growing in leaps and bounds. With everything from Pilates workout tapes to Pilates equipment becoming commonplace, it seems this form of modernized exercise has really taken hold. Windsor Pilates classes, books and more teach people the movements of this workout option. From gentle training to obvious physical results, the benefits of this activity are becoming widely known. A Pilates workout takes the mind and body into account and strives to transform the body by building strength without bulk. The end result of using Pilates equipment, such as the Pilates ball, is a look that's toned and strong, but not overtly so. While this fitness activity draws on similar principles as the ancient practices of yoga and the martial arts, Pilates is thoroughly modern in its execution. The old ways, however, have their place in this activity. Whether it's yoga, Pilates or the martial arts a person endeavors to try out, these activities are all linked by their strong focus on mind and body. Working out one without the other is deemed impossible by these activities. From the gentle movements of tai chi, the more action-packed sparring of kung fu and the body toning and strengthening stances of Pilates, these forms of exercise all have a strong and loyal following. |
