Shopping around for medications makes sense.
Medications don't have to Break the Bank
Getting sick is bad enough. Having to pay the bill after the visit to the doctor can add insult to injury. And, if that weren't bad enough, medications can cost an arm and a leg. Shopping around for them, however, can result in some pretty big financial savings.
Where to go and what to look for in prescription medication savings will depend a whole lot on the kind medications being sought. There are times when it is imperative to get the prescription filled right away, no matter the cost. Other times, it's more than acceptable to wait a few days to take advantage of the best savings.
The options for buying drugs such as Ambien, Lexapro, Xanax and more should be carefully weighed and considered. Full price doesn't have to be the only way to go on the prescription front. Whether it's Adipex, Soma and Adderall being sought, there is more than one location for person to go to get these medications filled correctly for use.
When it is possible, shopping around for savings can be very important. The reality is few people have it in their budgets to pay some of the high prices attached to medications today. When a multitude of medications are prescribed, many people find themselves in a position of being able to buy the medications for the month or food. If those are the only two choices, a no-win situation quickly presents itself. With this in mind, shopping prices can be a vital concern.
The choices on where to go to buy prescription medications such as Lipitor, Xenical and Propecia include those with instant service and those without. They are:
- Drug stores. The benefits of going to drug stores for medications like Effexor, Nexium and Zyrtec are undeniable. The perks here include instant access to the medications and generally very qualified pharmacy staff that's available to answer questions. While the prices can be higher, the face-to-face time with a pharmacist can be invaluable. Pharmacists worth their weight in gold are well versed on checking for drug interactions and they keep up with the prescriptions their customers take just to watch out for this. They also are fantastic at recommending other remedies, including some home remedies for more common afflictions. In addition to having staff on hand for questioning, these locations tend to carry a variety of medications that can be filled and released for customer use within minutes of arrival. When speed is of the essence, nothing beats these locations.
- Mail order. Generally endorsed by insurance companies, mail order pharmacies carry their own perks for customers. By offering door-to-door service, convenience is most certainly one of their selling points. Selling typically in a multi-month supply, these pharmacies can offer very big cost savings. Some of the better prices on maintenance medications are found through these companies. From Fosamax and Paxil to Vicodin and Lexapro, they tend to offer it all. While most of these locations do offer over-night service in a pinch, the reality is for prescriptions that are must-haves right away, these outlets might not be the best of choices. They do generally have on hand pharmacists that can answer questions over the phone, but they cannot put needed items, such as pain killers and antibiotics into clients' hands right away.
- Online pharmacies. These online pharmaceutical locations are breaking new ground everyday. Offering just about every medication imaginable, they function in much the same manner as regular drug stores or mail order supplies. The same type of benefits and downfalls exist for these locations as with mail order. When timing is of the essence, these locations might not be the best choice, even though their cost savings can be quite remarkable.
When medications are needed, the fact is the costs can get out of control. There are things patients can do on their end. From shopping around for the best prices to buying in bulk, shrinking the bill is possible. There are also things doctors can do when they prescribe new medications to help their patients deal with the financial crunch. These money-saving measures include:
- Limiting the prescription. When only a two-day supply of a medication such as Vicodin is needed, the prescription should be written for just that. While six pills in a bottle might seem like a wasted trip to the pharmacy for some patients, the reality is the cost savings for those who buy by the pill rather than the prescription can be more than appreciable.
- Offering trial packages. Most drug companies give doctors samples of the medications. From antibiotic samples to trial packs of Soma, Zyrtec and more, these items can be given out to patients. Not only can trying the sample packs save patients money they might not have to spend, this is a great way to test for any potential side effects without wasting patients' money. When the trial packages are on hand, it just makes sense to use them.
- Advising on generics. It's a simple fact of pharmaceuticals that not all generics are as good as the brand name options. When they are or they will work at least as good as the brand names, doctors can offer generic advice to their patients. Better yet, they can write the prescriptions for the generic rather than the brand name. This takes all the guess work out of the equation for the patient and can result in some major money savings.
- Offering alternatives. When doctors have patients that simply cannot afford their medications, be the prescription for Ambien, Lexapro or something else entirely, alternative choices should be offered.
Buying medications can be one of the most grueling experiences a patient has to endure. As if the injury or illness weren't bad enough, the bills for some medications can be outrageous. There are ways to shave dollars off most prescriptions that can result in budgets being met without health - or food - being sacrificed. It doesn't matter whether the medication is for sleep apnea, allergies or blood pressure, money savings should likely be a concern. For many, it is a huge one.
Fortunately, there are ways to get necessary prescriptions without having to break the bank. Shopping around can help greatly as can having doctors get in the act by helping ensure their patients have alternatives available.
