Childbirth & pregnancy information women can use.

Straight Information about Childbirth & Pregnancy

Getting pregnant and having a baby can be one of the most exciting, joyous and wonderful times in a woman's life. It can also be one of the most frightening, scary and stomach wrenching. When a woman arms herself with straight information about childbirth & pregnancy, she can help ally fears, learn what to expect and when there actually should be cause for concern.

Pregnancy can be a breeze for some women and for others it can be a roller coaster from day one right up until childbirth. The smartest thing for a woman to do, from the second she gets pregnant until delivery day, is to take care of herself and her unborn child. This means eating right, taking vitamins, avoiding caffeine, cigarettes and drugs. Stopping birth control, if it is used, can also be extremely important during pregnancy and even after childbirth.

To ensure taking the right steps happens as quickly as possible, it is a very good idea for a woman to be aware of the early pregnancy signs. The typical pregnancy signs include:
  • Swollen, tender breasts. This tends to be one of the very first signs of pregnancy most women experience. As the body prepares itself for the challenges of motherhood and breastfeeding, tender breasts are quite common.
  • Fatigue. This is also one of the most common pregnancy symptoms reported.
  • Spotting. While a full period won't likely occur, spotting as the egg attaches to the uterus is quite common.
  • Morning sickness. During pregnancy nausea and vomiting are often very common. While it is commonly called morning sickness, the reality is these symptoms and food aversions can show up at any time day or night.
  • Lack of menstruation. While spotting can happen during early pregnancy, the absence of a full period is one of the sure signs.
  • Frequent urination. This is common in the first and the last stages of pregnancy.
When one or several of the signs of pregnancy are noticed, it is a very good idea to go ahead and take a pregnancy test. If it is too early, wait until the instructions deem it is time to do so, but it never a bad idea to err on the side of caution and proceed as if pregnant.

If a pregnancy test confirms the suspicions, the next step involves finding a good obstetrician. Most doctors do not insist upon seeing patients during the earliest weeks of pregnancy. Still, pregnant women can do their part early by taking pre-natal vitamins, eating right and avoiding things that might be damaging to the baby.

Once a visit to a doctor has been completed, most pregnant women find they come home loaded with more information than they counted on. What to expect and how pregnancy & childbirth will go varies from woman to woman. There are some typical stages, however.

Broken up into trimesters, each comes with its own special signs. They include:
  • The first trimester. This includes the earliest months of pregnancy. The early signs of pregnancy are what are generally felt here. From breast discomfort to stomach complaints, the body will slowly, yet gradually prepare itself to handle the many changes ahead.
  • The second trimester. Some women begin to show during the first trimester, but it is more common at this point. As the baby begins to grow, a woman's body will generally adapt. Although there are no two weeks in pregnancy exactly alike, it is possible the mother-to-be will feel alive and wonderful during this stage. A typical pregnancy week during this phase will be much easier then in the coming trimester.
  • The third trimester. As the baby continues to grow, the space inside mom will become constricted. She is likely to find herself feeling tired out and may have such complaints as back pain, breast discomfort, swelling in the extremities and more. Any concerns should be brought to a doctor's attention immediately.
The stages of pregnancy tend to progress according to a fairly set clock. If symptoms and signs seem to be a little off, it is not a bad idea to inquire about them. Doctors expect a lot of questions. Since no two pregnancies develop exactly the same, it is possible the first-time mother will have as many questions as the fourth-time mother. It is okay to ask about anything and everything to do with pregnancy and giving birth. That is what the doctor is there for.

Women who want to track the typical signs and symptoms they should be feeling at any given point during pregnancy & childbirth will find a pregnancy calendar can be very helpful.

Childbirth itself is most certainly a roller coaster ride even during the best of deliveries. It is important during this time to relax as much as possible. The options for actually giving birth might vary from hospital to hospital and even doctor to doctor. It is also possible that some physical conditions might arise that limit the childbirth options. One thing for certain is that even the best laid plans for childbirth can go awry. Plan for one method of giving birth, but don't forget the possibility for emergency actions always exists.

Do discuss any concerns about giving birth with a doctor and be sure to fully understand the delivery options available. The most common choices include hospital delivery with pain blocking medications, natural delivery in a hospital, C-section and even mid-wife assisted childbirth at home. What is best for one woman and her baby will vary from woman to woman and even pregnancy to pregnancy.

Prior to giving birth, it is also a good idea to have a plan in place on how to handle birth control needs when they become necessary again. Birth control pills are the most common choice, but these might not be smart for breastfeeding mothers. Consider the choices for this before baby arrives. While it won't be weeks until they are needed, the whirlwind that is about to result will make remembering this need a bit difficult in the days and weeks ahead.

Once the delivery is over and the birth announcements go out, the trials and tribulations of pregnancy and giving birth will very likely seem worth every minute. There is something about holding a precious bundle of joy that changes everything.

From the very first signs of life to the actual delivery, childbirth & pregnancy can be a wonderful adventure. The more a woman arms herself with information, the better she will be poised to make decisions as the need arises.
